Active Player
A person who is still playing / contributing to the 'action' and therefore, the pot
Add-On
Refers to time, the game is paused in certain tournaments, in order that a player can buy more chips
Back Door Cover / Matador
A cover that occurs in the waning moments of a game
Belly Buster
A draw to fill an inside straight
Bicycle / Wheel
The lowest possible five-card hand in low-ball Poker, i.e., Ace, two, three, four and five
Big Blind
The larger of the 2 compulsory bets in a Flop poker game. This bet is made by the person sitting two seats to the left of the 'dealer'
Big Slick
An Ace and a King
Blinds / A Blind Bet
A compulsory bet in some Poker games (Hold'em). Small and Big Blinds are posted by the 2 players to the left of the dealer. These 'Blinds' are then required to be payed by the next people round the table on the next game
Bluff
When a player raises in the hope that he will frighten his opponents from the table, making them think he / she has a strong hand, when in fact they have a weak one
Board
The cards that are dealt face-up in the middle of the table

Bounty
Refers to a small cash prize given to a player for knocking out another opponent
Broadway
Straight, with an Ace-High
Busted Flush
A hand that is one card short of a flush
Button / Puck
a small circular disk used in flop games to indicate the person dealing or to signify the player in the last position when there's a house dealer
Call
The process of matching the current bet in order to continue to participating in the game. In Keno and Bingo, it is the process of drawing numbers for each game
Card Room
The room where Poker is played
Caribbean Stud Poker
Type of Poker game with 5 cards where players go against the house
Closed Poker
A game where all the cards are dealt face down
Complete Hand
Refers to a hand in which all 5 cards gain favour, ie: a straight, flush, full house, or a straight flush
Dead Money
The money in the pot that was put there by players who have folded before things hotted up
Dealer's Choice
Where the dealer choses the type of game played
Declare Game
The player must declare or show the value of his hand in order to take the pot
Designated Dealer
The players take it in turns to 'represent' the dealer (not actually, or necessarily dealing). The person to the left of the actual dealer commences and with each game, the 'dealer button' is moved around the table. This ensures that the blinds are always moved around the players
Deuce to Seven / Kansas City Low Ball
A game of Poker where a hand of 2 to 7, without a flush, is the best hand. It is also known as Kansas City Low Ball
Double Belly Buster
A hand where there are two possible cards that can make the inside straight
Double Gut Shot
A broken run of cards where either of two cards will complete the straight
Draw
Draw - Relates to the poker games. Basically it means to draw a card (e.g. if you need a card to make a straight, you are on a 'straight draw' or are 'drawing to a straight'.
Draw Dead
When a player tries to make a hand that will in no way beat his opponent (who's hand is better), he is 'drawing dead'
Draw Low Ball
A type of Poker game, where the lowest hand wins
Draw Out
When an opponents hand turns out to be worse than it originally appeared after the draw
Draw Poker
A type of Poker game, where each player is dealt 5 cards, he / she can then discard one or more and swap them for new unseen ones
Drawing Hand
A hand which needs a specific card from the draw in order to fulfil its promise
Effective Odds
The ratio of the total amount of money a player can expect to win, if he makes his hand, to the total amount of the bets he will have to call, in order to continue from the present round of betting to the end of the hand.
Equity
A share of the pot as calculated by a player
Expectation
A players calculated profit or loss at the table, based on the technique used, average wagers places, number of rounds played or time spent
Family Pot
A pot where most of the players are still 'active', (playing) at the end of the hand
Fill up
To complete the 'full house'
Fish / Sucker / Provider / Mark / Live One
A defamatory term used against a player who is lacking in skill and plays badly
Fishing
A player who stays in the game waiting / hoping / 'fishing' for a good card
Five-Card Draw Draw
A type of Poker game, where each player is dealt 5 cards, he / she can then discard one or more and swap them for new unseen ones
Five-Card Stud
A type of Poker game, where the players get one face-down card and four face-up cards
Flat Call
To call a bet, without raising it
Flat Limit
Refers to the betting limit not changing from one round to the next

In Hold'em Poker, the flop is the name for the first three community cards that the dealer places face up on the 'board', in the centre of the table. These cards are dealt after the first round of betting, and a subsequent round of betting follows their being placed on the table
Flop Games
The name for the Poker games played with 5 community cards, dealt out in 3 goes; the Flop (3 cards), the Turn and finally the River
Flush
A hand where the player has 5 cards all of the same suit. This hand is made up from the community cards and / or any from the ones that he was dealt
Fold
When a player doesn't 'call' a bet and drops out of the hand or round, either because he / she doesn't have enough chips to continue playing or because they don't believe their hand will win
Four of a Kind / Quads
Four cards of the same rank
Four-Flush
Refers to a player hand consisting of four cards of the same suite, before the Turn or the River. Ie: the player still has a chance of making the 'Flush'
Fourth Street
In Hold'em it is the fourth community card that is dealt face-up, by itself, after the 'Flop', on the 3rd round of betting. In Seven-Card Stud, it is the 2nd round of betting, because the players each hold 4 cards
Free Ride
To remain in a hand without having to call a bet. A player may get a 'free ride' if he / she has a bad hand, but it costs them nothing to stay in a game
Freeze Out
A tournament where all the players start with the same stake, and by the end, the winner has all the chips
Full House
Refers to a hand where a player has 3 cards of the same rank and 2 cards of another rank between the cards tha the holds and the community cards, ie; 'Three of a Kind' and a 'Pair'
Get the Right Price
To call a bet or to raise with a drawing hand whenever the pot odds are favorable enough to do so
Get There
To make a good hand by drawing the right cards
Give Action
To bet, call, raise or re-raise - ie: to be active
Going All-In
Refers to a player committing all their remaining chips in one fail swoop. In Poker, it is calling with (betting) everything you have left. In a No Limit game, if another player bets more chips than you have left, you can still bet what you have, against the same amount of his / her chips
Gut-Shot
To draw to and / or hit an inside straight
Gut-Shot Straight
Refers to a player holding a certain run of cards, and the flop showing more cards to enhance the run - however a key linking card is missing - if this linking card then comes down on the turn the player has made a 'gut-shot straight
Gypsy In
To limp in to a game
Hand
Refers to the cards that you hold, or make between the cards that you hold and the community cards (totaling 5), or everything that happens between shuffles of the cards
Heads Up
To contest a pot at a table that that has no other players.
High Poker
Standard type of game, in which high hand wins
High-Low Poker
The highest and lowest hands split the pot
Hit
In Poker 'to get hit' is a positive thing - it means that your hand has been improved by the 'Flop', the 'Turn' or the 'River'
Hit and Run
To take a big win and then leave the table after only playing a short time
Hold 'Em / Texas Hold'Em
Type of poker game where a player receives 2 'hole' cards, and can use these in conjunction with the 5 'community' cards to make the best 5 card hand he / she can
Horsing / Scoot
To pass a small amount of chips to another player upon winning a pot
Ignorant End

Implied Odds
The odds you are getting after the assumed result of betting for the remainder of the hand

A player who has called all the bets and is 'active'

Kind of a 'Ready, Steady, Go' for a tournament. The director will say this to the dealers to get the games underway
In the Dark
To check or bet blind, without looking at one's cards
Inside Straight
Four cards which require another between the top and the bottom card to complete a straight. Players who catch this card make an Inside Straight
Isolate
To raise in a round of Poker with the intention of reaching a heads-up with one other player
Jackpot
A special bonus paid in a high-stakes poker tournament, if they are beaten whilst holding a good hand
Jam
To bet or raise the maximum allowed.
Jammed Pot
A pot that has been raised the maximum amount possible
Kansas City Low Ball
A type of Poker where the low cards win - ie: 2's to 7's
Keep Honest / Table Cop
To call at the end of a hand to prevent someone from bluffing
Key Card
The card that a player needs to complete their hand
Key Hand
The hand that changes a players run of luck for the better or worse
Kick It
To raise the bet
Kicker
In Draw Poker, an odd high card that doesn't help the straight or flush that a player has
Kill
Also 'Kill Blind'. An oversize blind, usually twice the size of the big blind and doubling the limit. Sometimes a 'half-kill' increasing the blind and limits by fifty percent is used. A kill can be either voluntary or mandatory. The most common requirements of a mandatory kill are for winning two pots in a row at lowball and other games, or for scooping a pot in high-low split.

The name of a Queen and Jack in the pocket be they suited or otherwise
Meet
To call a players bet
Miss
To fail to get a drawing hand on the final deal
Monster
A strong hand that should not loose
Muck
The pile of folded and burned cards or a verb, to 'muck' a hand, to fold
Nit
When a player bides their time, waiting for a good hand to come up
Nut Flush / Nuts / World's Fair
The best flush that a player can get
Offsuit
Where the two 'hole' cards are of different suits in Hold'Em Poker
Omaha
A type of poker, similar to Hold'Em, but the player is dealt 4 'hole' cards rather than 2. The player must use 2 of their hole cards to form the final hand
On the Come
A hand that is drawing to a straight or a flush
On Tilt
Playing worse (usually, more aggressively) than usual because a player has become emotionally upset
Open
The player who makes the first bet
Open Poker
Games where some of the cards must be dealt face-up
Open-Ended Straight
Four consecutive cards whereby one additional (consecutive) card is needed at either end to make a straight
Out
A card remaining somewhere in the deck that will complete a winning hand
Outdraw
To defeat another player by drawing to a better hand
Outrun
To defeat another player by drawing to a better hand
Overcall
To call a bet that has already been called
Overcard
A 'hole' card that is higher than any of the cards on the 'flop'. In Stud Poker, it is a card that is higher than the opponent's probable pair
Pass
Not to call or check - to fold
Pat / Pat Hand
In Draw Poker, a hand that is complete, in Blackjack, a hand between 17 and 21
Pay Off / Keep Honest / Bluff
To have a player call or raise a bet in Poker when he does not think he has the best hand, usually on the final round
Play Back
To raise or re-raise a bet
Play the Board
To play the community cards rather than the hole cards held. A player will always have to split the pot in this way, if the community cards aren't beaten by any of the other players hole cards
Playing the Rush
Refers to a player that has had a run of good luck and then won a large pot. Their confidence is affected by the big win and their subsequent 'playing the rush' shows this.

The chips, cash or vouchers amassed from the blinds, the raises and the re-raises during a hand. It is found in the middle of the table and collected by the winner of the hand, or shared, 'split' amongst players
Pot Limit
An type of Poker, where players are restricted from placing enormous bets by only being allowed to bet the total of the Pot at the time.
Pot Odds
The playing odds, determined by the amount of money in the 'pot' relative to the amount a player will have to put in the pot to continue with the hand. To call a bet of $1, when there is $9 already in the pot would give pot odds of 10:1

To bet or raise with the intent of pushing other players into folding, to limit the possibility of being 'out-drawn'

Ragged
A flop that doesn't appear to help any of the players is said to be 'ragged'
Rags
Cards of little or no help to a hand
Rainbow
Refers to a flop that contains three different suits or all the community cards not having more than 2 matching suits. It is not possible therefore to make a flush
raise
When a player matches and then increases upon a bet
Rake
The money that the casino charges for each hand of poker played. The money (a flat fee or 5-10%) is usually taken from the pot after each round of betting
Razz / Razzle-dazzle

Re-Buy
To re-enter an ongoing tournament after being knocked out, for an additional entry fee
Re-Draw
When a player draws and even stronger hands than his present (pot-winning) one
Re-Raise

Rock
A player who is good, yet predictable and only raises with the best hands. He / she will not tend to bluff

Round of Betting
The period during which each active player has the right to check, bet, raise or call. The round ends when the last bet or raise has been called by all players still in the hand

An Ace-high straight flush; 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace, all of the same suit. Unbeatable
Run
A straight, or a series of good cards
Run Over
To play aggressively, in an attempt to win the pot
Running / Runner-Runner / Runner
Two essential cards that come up on the 'Turn' and the 'River'
Running Pair
When the last two community cards make a pair
Sandbag
To check a strong hand with the intention of raising or re-raising later in the betting round

Scoop
To win the pot
Scoot / Horsing

Seat Charge
An hourly charge for playing in many public card rooms
Seating List
A list to which you add your name and wait for a place to become available at a table
Second Pair
A pair made with the second-highest card on the flop
Semi-Bluff
When a player makes a bet or raises based on a reasonable hand. If he / she is called on the bet, there is a possibility of winning the pot, if the opponent if bluffing or semi-bluffing with a worse hand
Set You In
To bet exactly the amount that your opponent has left
Seventh Street
In Seven-card stud, the fifth and final round of betting, where the players have 7 cards
Shark
A good player, who often pretends to be less able early in the game
Showdown
After the last betting round all the 'active' players must show their cards. It is often a tense moment, hence the dramatic term 'showdown'
Side Card
An unmatched card in the 'hole', which determines the winner when two players have equal hands. Eg: in Hold'Em Poker, the higher this card the greater the liklihood of winning the pot
Side Pot
A 'side pot' will be created when one or more players wants to call a bet, but doesn't have sufficient chips remaining to match the bet exactly. Whatever the player has, will be put into the main pot, along with an equal amount from any other player calling during that round. The extra chips / money, that the 'all in' player couldn't match then go into a side pot. The all in player will not be able to win that pot, as they have not contributed to it, they can only stake a claim on the main pot
Singleton
A card that is the only one of its rank
Sixth Street
Seven-card stud, the 4th round of betting, which is when players have 6 cards
Skin Game
A game where there are two or more cheats working together
Skinning the Hand
A cheats manner of getting rid of extra cards
Slow Play / Under bet
A strong hand that is being played weakly, to entice other players into contributing to the pot
Small Blind
The smaller of the 2 compulsory bets in a Flop poker game. This bet is made by the person sitting to the immediate left of the 'dealer'
Smooth
The best possible low hand with a particular high card
Smooth Call
When a player calls rather than raises
Snap Off
To win a hand, without a particularly strong hand. Usually happens against a 'bluffer'
Splash the Pot
To throw chips into the pot, rather than place them infront of you. Not a polite way of contributing to the pot!
Split Pot
When the pot is shared out amongst players due to them having hands of equal value
Split Two Pair
In Hold'Em Poker when a player has two cards that are then paired up on the 'flop'. The pairs are 'split' across the hole and the community cards
Stay
To remain in a hand by calling a bet and not re-raising
steal
To win the pot on a bluff, usually a player will do this if they are late in the betting order
Steel Wheel
A straight flush in Low-ball, i.e., ace, two, three, four and five.
Straddle
An optional, extra, blind bet before the deal, typically made by the player who is one to the left of the big blind, equal to twice the big blind - in effect, it is a raise on the blinds
Straight
A hand of any suit where the five cards run from one rank through to four ranks above that, eg: 5c, 6h, 7d, 8s, 9c
Straight flush
A hand of the same suit where the five cards run from one rank through to four ranks above that, eg: 5c, 6h, 7d, 8s, 9c
String Bet
A call bet, though more typically a raise, in which a player doesn't get all the chips required for the raise into the pot in one motion. Unless he verbally declared the raise, he can be forced to withdraw it and just call. This prevents the unethical play of putting out enough chips to call, seeing what effect that had, and then possibly raising

The rules set for a game, which may vary according to the table, game or establishment
Structure-Flop Games
A flop game that has set amounts for all the bets in the round
Stuck
When a player is in a in a negative position during a game and can't seem to extricate themselves
Stud Poker
Games where the first cards are delt face-down and the following cards face-up
Suck Out
To win a hand despite poor pot odds, without a particularly strong hand

A hand with three cards of the same suit that needs two more cards of the suit to make a flush
Three of a Kind / Trips / Triplets
Three cards of the same rank
Throwing a Party
A rather patronising term for a group of naïve and inexperienced players who are making significant contributions to the pot
Tight Game
A game with fewer than the desired number of players in most pots
Tilt
To play recklessly of wildly
Time
If a player needs extra time to make a decision, they may call 'time please' and be allowed a brief break. If they do not call for extra time, the dealer may rule that the player has folded
Time Money / Rake
An amount of money collected by the house every half hour or on the button
To Go
The amount needed for a player to enter the pot
Top Pair
A pair made with the highest card on the flop
Trey / Trips / Three of a Kind / Triplets
Three cards of the same rank
Trips / Three of a Kind / Triplets / Trey
Three cards of the same rank
Turn
In Hold'em it is the fourth community card that is dealt face-up, by itself, after the 'Flop', on the 3rd round of betting
Two Flush
Two cards of the same suit, requiring 3 more of the same suit to fulfil the 'flush'
Under bet / Slow Play
A strong hand that is being played weakly, to entice other players into contributing to the pot
Under the Gun
A player who has to bet first on a betting round. They are in a disadvantageous position, as they can't see what the other players have in mind
Under-Raise
When a player raises a smaller amount than the previous bet, which is only allowed if a player is going 'all-in'
Up Card (Poker)
All the community cards are up cards, as they are dealt face 'up', so that everyone at the table can see (and use) them
Wheel / Bicycle
The lowest possible five-card hand in low-ball Poker, i.e., Ace, two, three, four and five
Whipsaw
To raise before and after a caller who gets caught in the middle and might be happy to check otherwise!
Wild Royal Flush
A Royal Flush with a 'wild card' in the run
Wired cards / Back-to-Back
In poker, a pair, three, or four of a kind dealt consecutively or back-to-back in a hand, usually in a stud hand starting with the first card
Wired Pair
A wired pair in a hand
